By Taking Some DIY Debt Help Steps

Getting yourself into debt is easy as you can do that by impulsive shopping for a day or two. Though climbing out of debt may give you a great feeling, but it is not an easy job. Although the credit card offers in your mailbox may seem to be very exciting, yet succumbing to them may trap you into high interest debt in the long run. As it takes a lot to earn money, every penny must be taken care of. Using credit instead of cash is a habit that is seen among most individuals but this is a fatal financial habit that will undoubtedly lead to debt. Though there are many options that can ensure a life without credit card debt, you must always prefer DIY solutions that can pull you out of credit card debt once and for all. Here are some of them.

Develop a determination to get out of debt: Without a firm determination to stay out of debt, it is impossible to take any harsh steps to make ends meet. Though you may have all the things that you want in front of your eyes, succumb to your temptations and think of the debt that you’re already in and the constant calls of your creditors. You need to tell yourself ‘Never again’ whenever you feel that urge to spend money on things that you can do without.

Stop adding on to your high interest debt: When you’re already inside the debt hole, stop digging. For most debtors, this may mean shunning your credit cards and switching over to cash mode of operation. Credit cards carry outrageously high interest rates and the more you use them you keep on pushing yourself deeper into the debt hole. When you don’t have enough cash in your pocket, don’t buy it. Resorting to credit to get something that you can’t with cash is not the way to go in this economy.

Budget your way to financial glory: Budget is a loathed word in the US but there is no short cut to budgeting. The increase in the consumer credit card debt level is only due to the large number of people who do not follow a budget. Craft a frugal budget that eliminates all unnecessary expenses and follow it throughout the month.

Get professional help if needed: Not always is it possible for a debtor to manage his personal finances on his own. During such a situation, you can get help from the professional debt relief companies. Consolidate your debts and repay them in easy and affordable monthly payments so that you can pay off debt with ease.
Therefore, if you’re knee deep in debt, take the do-it-yourself steps mentioned above as self help is always the best help. Rein in your finances and control them to ensure a financially fit life in the long run.

With the economy struggling to recover from the financial crisis and just about everyone having to take a haircut on wages either through pay freeze or additional pension contributions, it is not surprising that many are struggling to manage debt.

Some families have also used borrowing as a method of generating cash to cover short term financing needs and are now struggling to repay what is owed.

Having a debt burden can be a severe wake up call to a family that has managed comfortably in the past. Whilst most will have taken out a mortgage loan to buy a home or a car loan to acquire a car, these would have been in better times when cash was more readily available. When times get tough it is hard seeing a way to make the income stretch to cover all the bills and that is where drastic action is needed. Debt will not go away of its own volition. In fact, if left unmanaged it will grow and eat away at the family relations and could lead to breakups or worse.

The first step is to prepare a detailed family budget of where the money goes each month. In fact, it is better to analyse spend over a much longer period to make sure that all incidental and unusual one off costs are identified and can be accounted for. These would include motor repairs, insurance premiums and TV licence fees if paid in one instalment.

Next is to classify the expenses into those that have to be paid, such as mortgage, utilities, council tax and loan payments and those that are more discretionary such as club memberships, entertaining or holidays.

The next part is easier – cutting out or down on the discretional areas can generate much needed cash to meet the other essential costs.

But even this cannot be enough sometimes. Attacking other cost areas by using comparison websites to switch telephone and utility suppliers to cheaper tariffs can also save some cash.

But tackling the debt can bring greater relief. Looking at the type of debt can quickly identify whether a remortgage or debt consolidation loan could ease the monthly payments. Having enough equity in the home can allow for some cash to be released to pay off debts with the repayment over a good long period. A consolidation loan means taking out a new obligation over a long period at good rates and using the proceeds to pay off either high rate debt (such as credit card balances) or loans with high monthly repayments.

For those with serious debts (over $15,000) and with no reasonable prospect of being able to repay then it may be necessary to look at a formalised debt management plan with lenders. An Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) is a formal and legally binding agreement between lenders and borrower to repay a proportion of what is owed over a period of up to five years. You will need the assistance of an authorised insolvency practitioner to negotiate with lenders and ensure that you can afford what is agreed. Once in place, an IVA protects you from any further action taken by lenders unless you fail to keep up the agreed payment plan.

It should not be necessary for you to sell your home but you may need to remortgage it to generate cash if there is equity. Unlike a bankruptcy, an IVA is not publicly declared and need only be known to you and whoever you choose to inform.

Although an IVA will affect your credit history for some years a satisfactory payment experience will help to rebuild your profile. That way, you should be able to apply for a loan for bad credit customers in the future should you need to borrow again. Bankruptcy is the final option to clear debt but is best avoided if at all possible as the consequences are far greater than an IVA.

Your credit history is a record of your financial relationship with credit providing institutions. Different lenders have different preferences: some like customers who pay debts regularly and others like people who have a bad record so that they can charge those more. Each lender has different criteria so if you are rejected by one it does not mean that you will be rejected by another. The important thing to remember is that the credit rating, an aggregation of data collated by three separate ratings agencies, is one aspect of a credit score, which is applied by a lender.

While you cannot influence the profile that a lender creates of a “perfect customer” you can improve your credit rating by doing a few basic steps and having a bit of extra knowledge and discipline. This will not guarantee that you get a loan or credit card but it will help you look a bit more financially attractive to a lender.

Get on the electoral roll: this is a register of all the people in the United Kingdom who are eligible to vote. Even if you are not a British citizen and are eligible to vote in European elections and local elections only get on the role. There are two forms of the role, one of which is publically accessible and one that is protected by the data protection act and is only accessible by a few agencies. If you want to avoid a lot of spam mail then get on the latter one.

Having a landline telephone may boost your rating. This may be a hangover from the pre-mobile past that shows that you are contactable in a permanent sense and that you have local community ties. Also get some bills in your name. Many of the utilities companies are sharing data with ratings agencies so if you never miss any of these payments then you will look less risky however the reverse also applies: if you do miss payments then you do not look great.

Have a little bit of debt. This may seem counter intuitive but what a lender wants to do is make money. If you already have credit cards and are the type of scrupulous person that pays off every debt every month and never pays any interest then you are not much use to a lender. Rather make regular payments over a period of time and accept that you need to pay a bit of interest. Do not get into debt, especially to lenders with high rates, just to improve your rating. You will not help yourself at all if you take on something you cannot afford or do not need.

Too many applications or too many old accounts will look bad on your credit rating. This looks like somebody is desperate or unsettled and that you are not the best customer. You must carefully select your lender from the many that are out there as some will specialise in certain loans or offer deals that will suit your lifestyle. Another action which does not look great is when you jump from 0% to 0% deals. This means you will be swapping cards regularly and again lenders may not like this.

There is a lot of information about us out there. What credit agencies cannot see is your race, religion, or colour; your salary; your medical history or your criminal record amongst other things. And, if you have had a minor bad debt situation, these records are usually wiped off after 6 years so with a bit of patience there is no reason that you cannot improve a poor score. Ultimately you can get a copy of your credit rating via one of the agencies mentioned on Moneysupermarket.com and challenge the company that put it there directly.

Learn how to guard against this growing crime

Credit and debit cards have made modern payment almost effortless. One quick swipe and the charge is instantly deducted from your account. No trips to the bank, no heavy change to carry around. Unfortunately the simplicity that makes credit cards so popular also makes them vulnerable to theft. A new method of fraud callled “skimming” is becoming increasingly prevalent across the nation, costing credit card issuers the equivalent of more than $350,000 a day. By becoming aware of the methods that these skimming theives use you can be better prepared to guard your own identity and credit standing against this growing crime.

How skimming works
An organized system of identity theft, skimming takes advantage of easy access to consumer credit cards and sophisticated technology. This technology allows skim artists to override credit card safety methods such as encoded security numbers and makes skimming a hard crime to trace. Here’s how these identity thieves steal credit information:

The Swipe — When a customer hands over their credit card to pay (usually in a restaurant, gas station, or large store), the cashier swipes the credit card through a legitimate payment machine to make the charge. The cashier can then secretly run your card through a pager-sized device called a “skimmer”. This device can read and store the information from more than 200 credit cards at a time. It is estimated that 10-15 restaurants a week around the United States are being identified as harboring skimmers.
Downloading — These “gofers” then sell the loaded skimming device to a counterfeiter for around $150 dollars. The counterfeiter downloads the credit card information to a computer.
Production — Counterfeiters use the credit information to produce cloned credit cards. Complete with holograms and magnetic strips, these fraudulent cards are often produced and ready to be sold within 24 hours.
Distribution — Cloned credit cards are sold for between $400 and $700, depending on the account’s available balance. With large and frequent transactions typically over a two-day period, criminals spend an average of $2,800 before discarding the card.

//-->

What you can do
Skimming is difficult to prevent because most consumers aren’t aware that their identity has been stolen until they receive their credit card statements. TrueCredit’s resident fraud expert, Jason Martinez, has these tips for protecting your credit from skimming.

Watch your credit card — While it is difficult to spot a skim artist, trusting your instincts can go a long way. “Follow your card when you hand it over to pay. Awareness is key,” said Martinez. “If you suspect something, talk to the manager and contact your credit card company.”
Pay with an alternative — Paying with cash or by check may seem old fashioned but it is a proven method of reducing your chances of credit card fraud. Visiting the ATM may not save you time, but it could save you from a skim thief.
Closely check your monthly statements — Review your monthly credit card statements very carefully. “Save your receipts and compare them against your statement,” suggests Martinez. “Going through this mini-audit each month will help you spot any unusual activity.”
Report the crime — If you find any unusual activity, such as unauthorized spending, closed accounts, or a change in address, you should contact your creditors and the credit bureaus immediately. Collecting evidence of the crime (bills, receipts and letters) can help you to clear your record.
Monitor your credit — Online credit monitoring is a good way to guard against this complicated brand of identity theft. These services alert you to changes in your credit report by email and provides you with professional fraud resolution assistance if your identity is stolen.

The credit industry is doing all it can to develop security methods that prevent this crime. Until high tech safety devices like fingerprint scanners and microchips hit the credit card market, your own awareness is the best way to guard against this crime.
